The process of procuring a licence or permit for buying and consuming alcohol in Oman (for non-Muslim expatriates) just got easier through the use of a ‘liquor app’ – Ibraz app – on your smart phone.
You don’t have to worry about convincing your sponsor to give you a No-objection Certificate or any other embarrassment in this regard as there is no need for an NoC from sponsors to procure liquor permits in Oman. The procedure using the Ibraz app is very simple and quick.
For seeking a liquor permit, you have to be an authorised non-Muslim resident with a valid resident visa and a residence card. Since consumption of alcohol is not in keeping with sacred Islamic traditions, Muslims (whether citizens or residents) cannot apply using this liquor app for a permit to purchase, consume or keep alcohol in their homes.
The amount of alcohol which a permit holder is allowed to purchase from a retailer is directly related to his salary. The rules state that one can spend only 10% of one’s monthly income on alcohol purchases at licenced retail outlets in Oman. This does not include any purchases made at duty free outlets at airports in Oman on arrival or before boarding flights to other destinations.
According to information provided by OUA, the market leading operator in Oman dealing in the marketing and distribution of many of the world’s most recognised leading beverage brands, new liquor permits can be procured using the new liquor app (Ibraz) in three simple steps. (OUA services hotels, restaurants, and bars throughout the country and has around 10 retail outlets selling to the expatriate population of Oman.
