Hopping around with Hopibi: No handshakes or Hi-5s, please

Over the past week, I have come across so many people in Muscat who seem to be taking the latest situation concerning the coronavirus outbreak lightly. Hello, please don’t hold out your hand when greeting someone!

Let alone using sanitisers or washing hands with soap and water regularly to keep the virus at bay, some people can be seen carelessly sliding their hands along several surfaces in public places, walls, railings, elevators, and then happily passing on their luck to everyone they meet. Its okay, guys not to shake hands these days.

No one will consider you rude. Everyone is aware about the reason behind reluctance in public etiquette, especially with regard to greeting each other. Also, let’s not make a mockery about it by knocking elbows or knees instead of shaking hands.

What’s most important is staying safe from possibly infected or carriers of the disease, and that can be best done by maintaining a good distance between one another during social interaction. When you meet someone in public, it’s okay to take one step backward before indulging in conversation. And when you sign off, just resist the temptation to offer your hand for a good-bye or a Hi-5.
